Summer Savings Program - FAQs

What is weather normalization?

Extreme differences in temperature from summer to summer have a significant impact on many Ontarians' electricity bills due to more or less air conditioning. What we want to do is compare apples to apples in terms of looking at last summer's consumption compared to this summer's; consumption will be adjusted to reflect an average summer.

How do I sign up?

You don't need to enroll in the program. If you meet the program eligibility requirements, you're automatically enrolled.

How do I know if I'm eligible for the program?

You're eligible for the program if:
  • You are a residential customer who directly receives an electricity bill (seasonal, recreational and bulk metered multi-unit residential accounts excluded) from Hydro One Brampton or a retailer
  • You have an active account with twelve months billing data at the same premises preceding the program season (July 1, 2006 to July 1, 2007)
  • You have an active account at the same premises for the full program season (July 1, 2007 to August 31, 2007)
I have a seasonal/recreational home and/or bulk metered multi-unit residence. Do I still qualify for the rebate?

Unfortunately your residence does not qualify.

I have a contract with an electricity retailer, and I get a bill from them directly. Can I participate in Summer Savings? How will I get my credit?

Yes. Since your retailer bills you, Hydro One Brampton will calculate the credit and provide to the retailer the credit amount due to you.

When will I receive my credit?

The program ends on August 31st, and the credit will appear on your electricity bill thereafter. The entire credit will be applied on one bill at the end of the program.

How much of a credit will I receive?

This will vary depending on how much electricity you usually use, and how much you reduce your consumption.

I wasn't living in my home last year, can I participate?

Unfortunately, you will not be eligible for the credit. Only those with a 12-month billing history at the same address as of July 1, 2007 are eligible.

I'm moving in mid-August. Can I get a partial credit?

Unfortunately, you will not be eligible to receive a credit since you will not be at your current billing address for the duration of the program.

Why are you paying people to do something they might do anyway?

The conservation programs we are offering this summer are designed to provide Ontarians with the tools and information to manage their electricity consumption. This program rewards Ontarians for making the effort to conserve and reinforces smart and responsible electricity consumption.

I won't be able to cut my energy consumption by 10% because I'm already doing everything possible to conserve. Why aren't you running a program that will give me a credit?

We appreciate everything that you are doing to conserve energy, particularly during the summer months when there is a strain placed on the system. Because of your proactive actions, you have been lowering your monthly costs since you started conserving. Although you may not receive a 10% credit because you are already maximizing your conservation efforts, you really have been saving for a long time.
