Loss of Electrical Supply - No Power or Partial Power

While our goal is to provide uninterrupted electrical service to you, it may unfortunately happen that the electrical service to your home fails. You may experience a complete loss of electrical service, or some of your lights or appliances may stop working. What should you do if this happens?

If this happens to you, please contact our 24-hour Control Room first at 905-840-6300, extension 7250. We are available seven days a week, 365 days per year.

We may be able to help you on the telephone, or if necessary, we will send a crew to your home (at no charge) to determine if the problem is inside or outside your home.

If we find that the problem is on our side of the demarcation point (usually at the meter base), we will make repairs at no charge to you, in most circumstances. However, if the problem is inside your home, we will suggest that you contact an electrical contractor to have the necessary repairs identified and completed. You may be required to have this work inspected by the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA).

A call to Hydro One Brampton could avoid unnecessary expenses. Call us first.

If Your Power Goes Out

If the power goes out in your house it would help us if you took the following steps:

  • Check to see if your neighbours are out of power. If they are, call us.
  • If the outage just affects your home it could be your main switch. Call us anyway. Don't attempt to repair it yourself. It will help if you can tell us:

    - is your house completely without power or do parts of your house have power?

    - does your stove or dryer still work, and if so, are they operating at full capacity?
If you call our office during an outage, a recording may inform you about the problem.

We attempt to deliver reliable, interruption-free power, but in the event that the power goes out, here are some useful tips:
  • Keep a flashlight handy.
  • Turn off or unplug as many appliances as possible to avoid possible damage when power is restored.
  • If you have an electric garage door opener, learn how to use the manual override.
  • Leave your refrigerator and freezer door(s) closed. Foods will last up to 24 hours if the door is left closed. Resist the temptation to peek inside to check.
  • Remember to reset digital clocks and alarms after power is restored.
  • Leave one light switch on so that you will know when the power comes back on.
