Electricity Retailers

If you wish to purchase electricity from one of the licensed retailers, you will be required to sign a contract. Most retailers offer a fixed price and term contract. Read the contract carefully, so you're aware of all the terms and conditions.

  • Hydro One Brampton does not go door-to-door soliciting for your business.
  • Electricity retailers and their salespeople do not represent Hydro One Brampton.
  • You should not show your hydro bill or share account information unless you decide to sign with a retailer.

For more information on Electricity Retailers, please visit the website of the Independent Electricity System Operator.

If you decide to sign a contract, you have a cooling off period. To cancel, you must notify the retailer, in writing, within 10 business days.

Visit http://www.oeb.gov.on.ca/html/en/communications/fs_naturalgasmktrs_elecretailers.htm for more information on the Code of Conduct for electricity retailers.

What to Ask a Retailer:

  • Do you have a license from the OEB?
  • What is the length of the contract and is there a penalty for canceling it?
  • Who gets any possible rebates?
  • What is the price per kilowatt hour being offered?
  • Are there any additional charges?
  • What if I move? Can I terminate early or transfer the contract?

What if I Have a Complaint?

All retailers must follow the Electricity Retailers Code of Conduct that establishes guidelines and standards. Retailers' salespeople are required to carry photo identification when retailing door-to-door, to indicate that any local offer is not being made by Hydro One Brampton, to clearly state the price and other terms, and to provide a clearly printed contract.

Consumers who wish to make a complaint about an electricity retailer should note the salesperson's name, company, and the time/date of visit and should contact the Ontario Energy Board at 1-877-632-2727.

For customers using more than 250,000 kWh of electricity per year

Since the beginning of the year, a new adjustment to wholesale prices called a "Provincial Benefit" has appeared on utility bills. This adjustment accounts for differences between the market price and rates paid to regulated and contracted generators.

The Provincial Benefit is calculated to reflect:

The difference between the market price and the regulated rate paid to Ontario Power Generation's baseload generating stations.

Payments made to suppliers that were awarded contracts through the Ontario's government's RFP process.

The difference between contracted rates paid to Non-Utility Generators and the market price. These costs used to be paid through the Debt Retirement Charge.

The Provincial Benefit may be a positive or negative number, depending on whether the market price is lower or higher than the fixed rates. Note the amount that appears on your bill may be different, taking into account the period of time covered in your bill.
